Other research

Dayton Children’s Clinical Trials (DCCT)

DCCT continued its participation in numerous clinical trials.

This past year the pulmonary department was hard at work with a number of cystic fibrosis (CF) trials. There are currently five active CF trials. In addition, this year the research staff applied to have Dayton Children’s recognized as a CF Therapeutics Development Center (TDC). In selecting these sites the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, Inc. (CCFT) considers such factors as previous enrollment in clinical trials, size of patient population, and the care center accreditation status. Dayton Children’s was awarded the grant and is one of 77 centers chosen. These grants expedite research and development of new therapies for patients afflicted with cystic fibrosis.

Other studies at Dayton Children’s:

  • In addition to CF studies, DCCT initiated a new trial targeted to take place in the Regional Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The study evaluates the efficacy and safety of the drug micafungin in comparison to the drug amphotericin B deoxycholate in treating infants with certain fungal infections.
  • The hematology/oncology department completed a study evaluating the efficacy, safety and tolerability of donepezil in children with persistent attention impairment, present at least 12 months after completing cancer treatment.  Another study initiated in hematology/oncology is a five-year observational study of children 2 to 6 years of age with iron overload in the body resulting from repeated blood transfusions treated with deferasirox.
  • The neurology department is evaluating a study intended for adolescents with migraine headaches.

Community studies:

  • A child immunization study concluded at a community-based practice, and a new study is in the pipeline. This study will evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a flu vaccine in children 2 to 17 years of age If you are interested in learning more about clinical trials and what is available, call 937-641-4467.
